Athlete Wellness Audit

Competitive sports are risky

But no athlete wants to be sidelined with an injury.

The Athlete Wellness Audit is about being proactive and identifying/addressing your injury risk factors before you sustain serious injuries…so you can stay in the game!

How else do you know if…

  • Your hips rotate enough to support running, pivots, and changes of direction without compensating in your lower back or knees?

  • Your ankles bend enough to absorb forces when you land or decelerate without compensating in your hips or knees?

  • (Goalies) You can reach your arms all the way overhead to block high shots without compensating in your back?

  • Your quadriceps and hamstrings can support forces 2-3 times your body weight when you need to control your body’s momentum over one leg?

Don’t let preventable injuries derail your dreams & aspirations.

4 Parts of an Athlete Wellness Audit

This assessment can be customized for anyone from soccer players to baseball pitchers to adults looking to weight lift, endurance race, or play pickleball. Here is an example of what an Athlete Wellness Audit looks like for a soccer player:

  • We chat about your experience level, current training, position/team role, sport demands, recovery strategies, and injury history. I want to know how you are tracking your training volumes/intensities (drastic changes can increase injury risk), if you are giving your body the resources like sleep, nutrition, and strength that it needs to heal and repair, if there's a pattern to your previous injuries, and if your previous injuries have been formally rehabbed.

  • If the the body can't move enough at one joint, it's going to complete the movement goal by moving more at a different one (likely increasing injury risk). We assess how the joints most relevant to your sport & position (for example, goalie vs field player) move and if they can achieve the positions needed for the movements of your sport. For a soccer field player, this means we are primarily looking at mobility at the big toes, ankles, hips, and trunk rotation. For goalies, we also look at the shoulders!

  • We test whether your muscles have the capacity to accelerate, decelerate, and control your body during the actions of your sport. For a field sport athlete, these actions are sprinting, cutting, pivoting, and kicking a ball. We use a force transducer to measure how much force your hamstrings, quadriceps, and other relevant muscles produce and compare these measurements for side-to-side symmetry, quadriceps-to-hamstring ratios, and in relation to your body weight.

  • We summarize our findings and help you to understand them and their significance. Then, we work together to Game Plan a few strategic ways you can start improving your identified risk factors.
